Introduction
Climate action today begins with measurement – because what gets measured gets managed.
This one-day, fully interactive program demystifies the process of greenhouse gas (GHG) accounting by transforming it into an experiential learning journey through the original game Carbon Quest: The Race to Net-Zero Malaysia.
Participants take on the role of “Sustainability Squads” representing Malaysian organizations racing to build the most credible, data-driven, and actionable GHG inventory.
Through five dynamic stages — Think, Understand, Apply, Validate, and Act — they explore the fundamentals of GHG accounting, define boundaries, calculate emissions, identify hot-spots, and design practical decarbonization actions aligned with Malaysia’s sustainability agenda, Bursa Malaysia’s SEDG, and ISO 14064-1 principles.
By the end of the day, participants not only grasp the technical aspects of GHG inventory preparation but also internalize the mindset of critical, collaborative climate leadership — linking data, decisions, and impact in a uniquely Malaysian context.
Learning Objectives
Program Flow: Think → Understand → Apply → Validate → Act
Think
•Explore why GHG accounting matters.
•Understand its role within the broader ESG and climate context.
Understand
•Define organizational boundaries.
•Set operational boundaries.
•Identify what to measure and where to measure it.
Apply
•Transition from theory to practice.
•Convert activity data into COâ‚‚e.
•Perform hands-on calculations to bring the inventory process to life.
Validate
•Deepen critical analysis of results.
•Identify emission hotspots.
•Verify data accuracy and reliability.
Act
•Translate insights into practical reporting.
•Develop emission reduction strategies.
•Apply continuous improvement using the PDCA (Plan–Do–Check–Act) mindset.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the program, participants will:
•Explain the purpose and importance of a GHG inventory within the ESG and national climate framework, including its connection to Bursa Malaysia’s SEDG, ISO 14064-1, and IFRS S2
•Define organizational and operational boundaries appropriate to their entity using control-based approaches and identify relevant GHG sources across Scopes 1, 2, and 3
•Collect, organize, and calculate emissions data accurately by applying emission factors and converting activity data into COâ‚‚e in a transparent and traceable manner
•Analyze and validate emission results to pinpoint high impact sources, data gaps, and opportunities for reduction through critical thinking and verification practices
•Develop a simple, actionable GHG reduction plan using the PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Act) cycle to support continuous improvement and align with organizational sustainability goals
•Collaborate and communicate effectively through team based problem solving, pitching, and gamified learning that reinforce Malaysia’s spirit of gotong-royong in driving collective climate responsibility.
Target Audience
Managers and practitioners in large and medium Malaysian SMEs who touch ESG directly or indirectly: sustainability/ESG teams, operations & maintenance, QA/HSSE, procurement, logistics, finance, sales/key accounts, internal audit, and senior management.
Course Outline
9.00AM – 10.30AM
Session 1 – INTRODUCTION TO GHG INVENTORY
This opening session sets the stage by connecting climate change realities to corporate responsibility. Participants explore why GHG accounting is not just a reporting requirement but a strategic lens for operational excellence, risk management, and ESG credibility. Through relatable examples and an interactive activity, participants will realize that emissions are embedded in every decision - from how we power our facilities to how we travel and consume. By demystifying scopes, boundaries, and terminologies, this session builds awareness that a GHG inventory is the foundation for credible climate action and future readiness.
10.30AM – 11.30PM
Session 2 – DEFINING BOUNDARIES AND DATA SCOPES
In this section, participants move from “why” to “what” by learning how to define their organizational and operational boundaries clearly. Using real-world scenarios, they understand how equity share, control, and influence determine which activities belong in the inventory. This part emphasizes the importance of data ownership, traceability, and accountability across departments. We include an activity that transforms abstract principles into tangible maps of what sits inside or outside an organization’s carbon footprint, enabling participants to make informed decisions about scope definition and reporting responsibility.
11.30AM – 1.00PM
Session 3 - COLLECTING AND CONVERTING ACTIVITY DATA
Here, participants roll up their sleeves to learn the nuts and bolts of data collection and emission calculation. They explore how to transform energy bills, fuel receipts, and activity logs into quantified COâ‚‚-equivalents using recognized emission factors and the COâ‚‚e formula. This hands-on segment emphasizes transparency, consistency, and the importance of data quality. We include a simulation that immerses learners in the process of converting raw operational data into measurable climate insights, empowering them to produce credible and auditable results that reflect real organizational performance.
2.00PM – 3.15PM
Session 4 – ANALYZING AND VALIDATING THE INVENTORY
This section teaches participants how to turn numbers into narratives that drive action. They learn how to aggregate emissions, identify hot spots, validate data accuracy, and visualize trends to guide decision making. By developing a GHG Heatmap, participants begin to see patterns that reveal the organization’s biggest emission drivers and areas of opportunity. Discussion around assurance, verification, and target setting reinforces the importance of credibility and continual improvement. By the end of this segment, participants can confidently interpret their GHG data and use it to support climate strategies and management reporting.
3.30PM – 5.00PM
Session 5 - REPORTING, REDUCTION, AND CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT
The final section ties everything together by showing participants how to communicate their inventory results, align with reporting frameworks, and chart a path forward. They explore how to translate emission data into meaningful narratives for stakeholders and how to embed the PDCA cycle into ongoing GHG management. Through the “Mini Action Plan Challenge,” each participant formulates one practical initiative that can immediately improve data capture or reduce emissions in their workplace. The day closes with reflection and commitment, leaving participants equipped to transform GHG inventory insights into sustained organizational change and climate resilience.
Methodology
The course is designed to be highly interactive, application-focused, and personalized so that participants walk away with practical sustainability reporting skills they can implement immediately. By integrating experiential learning, self-assessment, case studies, group discussions, and action planning, the program ensures lasting sustainable impact.
